Information for the Parents of our Learners

As a parent/guardian you will influence any potential apprentice.  The information in this section will help you to understand more about work based qualifications, how they work and how they will benefit your child.

What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a form of vocational training enabling people to earn while they learn the skills necessary to succeed in their chosen career. Apprenticeships combine on and off the job training – on the job, an apprentice will work with a mentor, learning skills on site and working towards a work based qualification such as an National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). Off the job, apprentices spend time with a learning provider, working towards a technical qualification such as a BTEC. Both qualifications are usually at Level 2 or 3.

Apprentices gain key transferable skills such as working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology as well as studying (in most cases) for a technical certificate, which provides further knowledge and understanding of the relevant job.

How long does it take?

There is no set time to complete an Apprenticeship as they vary widely in content so the length of time taken will depend on the ability of the apprentice and the employer's requirements.
An Apprenticeship will usually take anything from 12 to 36 months

Is this the right choice for my child?

There are a range of options now available for young people including A levels, diplomas and Apprenticeships. People who prefer to learn in a more traditional, academic way will continue to take A levels; those who enjoy the academic, classroom based learning but also want to get some experience of learning in the real world, will take up the new diplomas and gain valuable work experience. But if your family member has a clear idea of what he or she wants to do, prefers to learn through experience and wants to make things happen, then they will probably benefit most from doing an Apprenticeship.

What support will my child get?

Each apprentice is allocated an assessor who will offer guidance and support and will provide frequent workplace assessment visits and set targets and action plans to help progression and achievement.  Our job is to ensure that your child’s training fits their personal requirements, offers the skills needed for the job and satisfies national standards. We will also be there to help apprentices through any difficult times.

Following on from the Anti-bullying week from 16-20th November 2009, Training For Travel is supporting the Bullyproof campaign from the BBC's Radio 1 team. Cyberbullying is a relatively new form of bullying and is defined as

"the use of information communications technology (ICT), particularly mobile phones and the internet, to deliberately upset someone else."

Research has found that more than a third of 12–15-year-olds have faced some form of cyberbullying. Unfortunately, some people just don’t take cyberbullying as seriously as other forms of bullying - maybe because it is indirect and often perceived as anonymous. However, that doesn’t stop it from causing harm!
